  • A cylindrical shaped cushion, is hands down the best pillow for neck-pain and posture induced headaches due to it's smaller sleep surface compared to regular rectangular pillows.

Neck Roll Pillows vs. Regular Pillows

Neck-pain is a common issue impacting the lives of millions of Americans each day. Research suggests that roughly 80% of the population will experience neck pain in their life, and up to 50% of people will experience flare-ups each year. As we are spending more time on our phones, iPads, and computers, we are hurting our neck and spine.

Many people spend a significant time at their desk during the week. Depending on their chair and desk set up, they may have poor posture, putting unnecessary strain on their body, especially their neck. At the end of the day, they feel throbbing pain in their neck and go to lay down. But, unfortunately, many don’t find the relief they are looking for as their regular pillow doesn’t provide the support they need.

Neck roll pillows can provide more support for a sore neck than a regular pillow would. They are sometimes called cervical pillows as they support the cervical spine, located at the upper part of your back and neck. There are seven bones found in your neck that make up your cervical spine. They are supported by muscles, tendons, and spongy cervical disks. Typically, your cervical spine should have a gentle curve to it. When you sleep with a pillow that is too big or changes your head shape, you can lose this natural position. This causes stress on your spine and supporting structures which creates neck pain.

Neck Roll pillows have a distinct shape. They are often in the shape of a cylinder, with enough firmness to support your neck. They are often higher, and prevent your head from tilting.  Just like regular pillows, neck roll pillows are made from various fabrics and materials. They may be filled with memory foam, synthetic fibers, or buckwheat hulls.

A Neck Roll pillows is best for those who sleep on their back or side.  If you sleep on your back, you should have a moderately filled pillow that provides enough filling to support the contour of your neck. You want to avoid tilting your head up and having your chin pointed down to your chest. For back sleepers, an adjustable roll that can be placed under the neck is best.

Side sleepers can also benefit from a neck roll pillow. Similar to back sleepers, you want to keep your spine straight and aligned. The cervical pillow should therefore be thick enough to hold your head up. It must be firm enough to do so while also preventing your head from sinking lower than your neck. Memory foam, for example, can cause your head to sink down gradually. It is also known to absorb heat, which won’t help you sleep!

Neck Roll Pillows are best for side sleepers. Our buckwheat neck roll pillow is 17 inches long and 6 inches thick. The longer length gives you enough space to turn over and still be supported by your pillow. It is also filled with buckwheat hulls making it fully adjustable. You can adjust the amount of hulls to suit you and your body shape.

A neck roll pillow won’t work for stomach sleepers. In fact, a stomach sleeper should avoid regular pillows as well as they are too large and can push their neck back. Instead, those who sleep on their stomach should use a stomach sleeper pillow. These pillows are specifically designed for this sleeping position and are much thinner, so they won’t contour your neck in unnatural ways.

Many people with chronic neck pain swear by a neck roll pillow. They may use them all night long or spend some time laying on the floor with their neck roll pillow for some pain relief. Several studies have looked at the effects of a neck roll pillow vs. a regular pillow with various results. Some studies found that there was little difference, where others found that a roll pillow “noticeably improved chronic neck pain.”  One study with 128 people with chronic neck pain found that a combination of physio and a neck roll pillow could reduce chronic neck pain. The study participants that only did physio didn’t experience as much relief and a reduction in pain as those who also used a neck roll pillow.

Neck roll pillows can not only help with neck pain but can help those who suffer from migraines. Headaches and migraines can be triggered by poor sleeping positions that impact the nerves at the bottom of the neck. This is why many people will go to sleep feeling fine and wake up in pain. Our neck roll pillow can reduce neck pain and posture-induced headaches.

The therapeutic benefits of buckwheat pillows are the main reason why our neck roll pillow models are chosen over other neck pillows. They not only provide the perfect balance of head, neck, and shoulder support but are covered in a super soft bamboo pillowcase. There is no need for extra pillowcases either; these pillowcases come in two designs and are durable and machine washable!

Are all neck roll pillows the same?

No, neck roll pillows aren’t all created the same. As mentioned, the filling within a neck pillow makes a significant difference just as the shape does. Some people may use the U-shaped travel pillow in place of a neck roll pillow, but won’t find the same benefits.

If you have tried to sleep on a plane with one of these, you know just how uncomfortable they can be. This version of the neck pillow was first patented in 1929, and very little has changed since. Though there are versions in memory foam and even down-filled options, they aren’t as helpful. The neck support isn’t enough, so your head is more likely to tilt in ways that it shouldn’t. Further, sometimes these travel neck pillows are filled with chemicals and toxins. Often purchased for a low price on websites like Amazon or at the airport, they contain synthetic materials and chemicals which are breathed in when you sleep. For those with allergies or sensitivities, this can also trigger headaches.

Some cervical pillows look more like a regular pillow but with an indentation for your head and a larger, attached roll that supports your neck. Additionally, there are hard, foam cervical rolls that go under your neck. Though these pillows can help maintain proper alignment while sleeping, they are not always comfortable.

A buckwheat-filled neck roll pillow will provide support, comfort and is free from chemicals. Our buckwheat neck roll is filled with 100% US-grown, organic buckwheat hulls. This filling is all-natural and hypoallergenic, so you don’t need to worry about what you are breathing in. Unlike other pillows, it is also adjustable. You can adjust how much filling is in your neck roll pillow, to get your desired shape and firmness.

If you are trying to decide between a neck pillow and a regular pillow, know that you don’t need to choose one or the other. Many people will use a neck pillow in addition to a regular pillow. You can keep it near your bed and use it when you feel neck pain creeping in. Each person has unique needs and comfort levels.

There are also regular pillows that can help ease neck pain. A buckwheat or millet pillow provides proper alignment and support, so you don’t wake up achy the following day. These are also suitable for all sleep positions, so if you are the type of person that changes positions throughout the night, you may be better off going with a regular pillow.

How to use a neck roll pillow?

Using a neck roll pillow is relatively straightforward but it depends on your sleeping position and the shape of your pillow. For example, if you sleep on your back with a neck roll, you will place the neck roll under your neck. This will support your head without tilting it forward or backward. If you sleep on your side, a neck roll should be placed under your neck and keep your nose in line with the center of your body.

Just like a regular pillow, you should wash your neck roll pillow regularly. However, if yours is filled with buckwheat hulls, you will first remove these and then place the pillowcase in your washing machine. Because buckwheat hulls are hypoallergenic and are kept secure in your pillowcase, there is no need to wash the buckwheat hulls.

If you are looking to try a neck pillow for the first time, don’t be too quick to toss away your old pillow.  Switching from a regular pillow to a neck pillow can be an adjustment and may take some getting used to.  You can gradually increase the amount of time you spend on your neck pillow and reduce the time with a regular pillow until you have completely transitioned.

Many healthcare professionals like physical therapists, doctors, massage therapists, and chiropractors recommend using a neck pillow for those who experience neck pain. If you are in pain, you should speak with a healthcare provider to determine the cause - it may be a simple solution, like switching from a regular pillow to a neck pillow, to wake up pain-free.

Ask a Question
  • I am interested in the buckwheat pillow for lumbar support. I like it super firm. Is it possible to fill it with extra hulls to make it more firm? If yes, how much for the added hulls to fill it so much that it's very firm? Thank you! Take care, Lisa

yes it's possible. We usually overstuff all our pillows in first place.

Just drop us a line once your order was placed if you want to make absolutely sure that we fill your pillow to the maximum fill level.
