Product Questions

The Japanese Size is people's most popular choice. It's really all you need size wise, unless you move your head around a lot and/or tend to put your arm underneath the pillow. In such cases we recommend the standard size pillows.

While all our Premium pillowcases are designed and made to add the most comfort you can get to a firm buckwheat pillow, the softness level of the pillowcases can be rated as followed:

Ā

1.) Premium Bamboo Pillowcase

2.) Cooling Pillowcase

3.) Tencel Pillowcase

4.) Cotton Twill/French Linen Pillowcase

1.) Usage

Buckwheat Hulls are the traditional filling for pillows in Japan while Millet Hulls are more popularĀ in Europe.

2.) Noise Level

Buckwheat Hulls are noisier than Millet hulls due to their larger and firmer surface

3.) Smell

Buckwheat Hulls have a bit of a natural earthy smell to them which is less distinctive than the natural nutty smell of Millet hulls

4.) Size

Millet Hulls are about a 10th of the size of buckwheat hulls

5.)Ā Softness and Moldability

Due to the small size of Millet Hulls they create a more moldable pillow which conforms better to your head than buckwheat hulls

You can read more about it here in our blog.

Buckwheat Pillows make a gentle rustling noise when moved. Most people adjust to the sound after a couple of nights.Ā

Millet Pillows create very littleĀ to almost no noise.

Our Lavender Aromatherapy Pillows smell at least for a year.Ā

Due to the buckwheat hulls rubbing against the lavender buds, the lavender smell is intensified each time you move the pillow.

With proper care our pillows last up to 10 years.Ā

Over time, the buckwheat/millet hull filling will slowly become flattened, and lose some of their elasticity which may reduce air-circulation and loft.

We offer affordable refills in our addon section of our store.

Read more about it in our blog.

Our premium pillows (except our basic and traditional pillows) do not need to be used with additional pillowcases.

Our Premium Models are made with one inner and one outer pillowcase. The outer pillowcase is what you can use as sleeping surface and each pillowcase type hast it's own benefits.

All our pillowcases are machine washable and removeable.

Our Basic and Traditional models do not come with a pillowcase (unless you add one).

Pillow Care Questions

If your pillow gets wet, simply remove all hulls from it and let them air dry again

Buckwheat hulls are very resitant to water, so they don't break down when they get wet.Ā

You just want to make sure to dry them so no mold can build up

The same goes for Millet Hulls

You can technically wash them, but there is no need.

Buckwheat and Millet Hulls are hypoallergenic.

All our pillowcases come with a zipper which makes them easily adjustable.

Simply open all zippers when the pillow is in an upright position.

We suggest you use a cup or glass to remove hulls as needed.

It usually only takes one or two cups of removed hulls to feel a difference in the fell and moldability of the pillow.

The more hulls there are in the pillow, the firmer and less moldable it is. Removing hulls makes it softer and more moldable.

It takes no more than 3 min. of your time to adjust the pillow.

We recommend to air out the pillow every 2weeks and if desired you can also wash the inner shell by emptying out the hulls first. For more details, please check out are blog article about how to clean a buckwheat pillow.

There is a lot of talk on the internet about buckwheat pillows being infested with bugs. Most of that talk comes from people who have never even used a buckwheat pillow and often times it's also pushed by larger companies that try to sell you their memory foam products. To set the record straight, the likelihood of bugs getting into a buckwheat pillow are the same as bugs getting into a fiber filled, or memory foam filled pillow.
