Questions & Answers
What is a Sobakawa pillow?
A Sobakawa is the original Japanese buckwheat pillow. It features a simple, durable cotton shell filled with 100% buckwheat hulls. The design prioritizes firm, moldable support and natural airflow—a tradition trusted for centuries for better sleep and posture.
Who is this Classic pillow best for?
This pillow is ideal for **purists** and anyone seeking **extra-firm, traditional support**. If you're a side or back sleeper who wants a no-frills pillow that locks in place, this is for you. If you prefer a softer, more cushioned feel, our Premium Buckwheat Pillow with its padded bamboo cover might be a better fit.
How is this different from your Premium pillow?
The main difference is the cover. The **Classic Sobakawa** has a single, durable cotton twill shell for a direct and firm feel. The **Premium Pillow** features a two-layer design with a soft, quilted bamboo outer cover that adds cushioning and muffles sound. Think of the Classic as the authentic, extra-firm original and the Premium as a modern, luxury version.
How do I adjust the loft and firmness?
It's simple. The pillow has a heavy-duty YKK zipper, allowing you to easily add or remove buckwheat hulls. Take some out for a softer, lower pillow, or keep it full for maximum firm support. We intentionally overstuff our pillows so you have plenty of hulls to customize your perfect loft. For full guidance, read our adjustment article →
How do I wash and care for it?
The cotton shell is fully machine washable. Just follow these steps:
1. Unzip the cover and pour the buckwheat hulls into a box or bag.
2. Machine wash the empty shell on a gentle cycle and air dry completely.
Important: Never get the buckwheat hulls wet. To refresh them, just spread them out in the sun for a few hours. Read our full cleaning guide for more details.
The PineTales Difference

| What's Inside |
Often contain leftover bits of flour and dust. This isn't just messy—it can attract bugs over time.
|
Cleaned in four separate stages to ensure the hulls are pure, breathable, and free of anything that could attract pests.
|
| "Loft" Adjustments |
Many use flimsy hidden zippers that snag and break easily, making it impossible to adjust the pillow's height (loft).
|
Uses a durable, visible YKK zipper that's built to last. It's easy to add or remove hulls to perfect your pillow's loft.
|
| Amount of Filling |
Often arrive under-filled, forcing you to buy more hulls separately to get the support you need.
|
Intentionally overstuffed so you have more than enough filling. You can remove hulls to make it perfect, not buy more.
|
| How The Cover Feels |
Covers are often made from thin, cheap fabric that feels rough and doesn't hold up well to use or washing.
|
A thick, high-quality cover that is soft to the touch and durable enough to last for years, even with regular washing.
|
| Long-Lasting Support |
Hulls get crushed and go flat within a year or two. Some use “pre-polished” hulls which are even weaker and break down faster.
|
Uses whole, unprocessed hulls that don't crush easily. This provides consistent, firm support that lasts for many years.
|
| Expert-Approved Design |
Generic designs that don't consider proper therapeutic support, often making neck and back alignment worse.
|
Customers often report that their chiropractors and physical therapists recommended our pillows for proper spine alignment.
