Morning headaches: How to prevent them

You go to bed feeling great and wake up with a headache - what a way to start your day! Often these morning headaches are a result of a strained neck. For migraine suffers, this can be enough to trigger a full fledge migraine. There are a few reasons this can happen; you are dehydrated, you have poor sleep posture, or your pillow is causing more harm than good.

Poor Sleep Posture

Maintaining good posture while we sleep is easier said than done. You may start out in a neck safe position, but all bets are off once you are asleep. If you tend to move a lot when you sleep and get into some odd positions, a neck pillow can really help. Although your legs and arms may continue to move about, your neck will remain supported, no matter what your position. A buckwheat pillow for your neck allows you to adjust the firmness my adding or removing the buckwheat hulls so you can get the perfect fit for your neck. Buckwheat pillows for your neck can be used in addition to your current pillow, millet pillow or hybrid pillow.

Dehydration

We perspire when we sleep, losing water, which can result in dehydration headaches when we wake up. To prevent this, make sure you are drinking enough water throughout the day. Avoid chug a large glass of water right before bed because it will keep you up in the night with trips to the washroom. Another way to prevent this is by ensuring you don’t overheat in the night. A lot of migraine sufferers who wake up with headaches find relief when they manage their sleeping temperature. A cooling pillow will help regulate your temperature and make sure you don’t overheat in your sleep.

Bad Pillows

Your pillow should support your head, not contort it. If your pillow is old, lumpy or too soft, it can put your head in a negative position, tilting it down. If your pillow is too big or firm, it can bend your neck up. You want your pillow to support the shape of your head, neck and shoulders. When your head is on your pillow, it should support the natural curvature of your neck. A pillow that is either too firm or too soft is unable to effectively do this. Pillows aren’t one-size-fits-all; a person who is 6ft and 300 lbs is going to require a different size pillow than a person who is 5ft and 110 lbs. Millet pillows can be customized so you get the perfect fit for your body by adding or removing filling.
Morning headaches can completely ruin your day. By staying hydrated, using a buckwheat pillow for your neck, and adjusting your millet pillow so it fits your body you can prevent these painful mornings. Investing in a supportive pillow like a buckwheat pillow, millet pillow or hybrid pillow can prevent the neck pain triggering morning headaches and help you wake up pain free!
