New to Buckwheat Pillows?

A buckwheat pillow is filled with natural hulls instead of foam or fiber. The hulls move with you as you settle in, creating a firm, adjustable feel with steady airflow through the pillow.

Most first-time users need a few nights to dial in the right fill level and shape. Read how long it takes to get used to a buckwheat pillow.

Learn more about how buckwheat pillows work.

Choosing the Right Size

Choose Japanese Plus (14" x 20") if you like a more compact pillow with a focused, traditional buckwheat feel.

Choose Standard (20" x 26") if you prefer more surface area or want something closer to the size of a regular bed pillow.

Both sizes are adjustable. The better choice simply depends on whether you prefer a smaller, more precise pillow or a larger sleeping surface.

Read our buckwheat pillow size guide.

Adjusting the Fill for Better Support

Start with the pillow as it arrives, then remove a small amount of hulls if it feels too high or too firm. Give yourself a few nights to fine tune the fill until your head and neck feel properly supported.

When lying down, gently shape the hulls into the curve of your neck instead of using the pillow completely flat.

If the pillow feels too high, too firm, or too noisy, it usually needs a small setup change before you judge it. Read the guide to common buckwheat pillow mistakes.

See our setup instructions.

Keeping Your Pillow Fresh

Remove any washable cover components according to your pillow model before cleaning. The buckwheat hull filling should always stay dry.

Regular airing and proper cover care will help keep your pillow feeling clean, fresh, and ready for nightly use.

The Perfect Buckwheat Pillow

The PineTales Approach
Material First
Whole hull structure comes first
We use whole buckwheat hulls because the natural shape is what creates the stable, supportive feel PineTales is known for.
Cleaned Properly
Refined, not over processed
Our 4-stage cleaning process removes dust and debris while preserving the integrity of the fill itself. We don't pre-polish hulls for a reason.
Designed to Fit
Overfilled so you can fine tune it
Every PineTales buckwheat pillow is intentionally overstuffed so you can adjust it downward until the support feels right for you. Our Pillows Ship out 5-7 inches thick making them ideal for many athletes, bodybuilders and side sleepers with wider shoulders.
Built for Buckwheat
Construction matched to a dense natural fill
From reinforced stitching to premium YKK zippers, we build around the actual demands of buckwheat—not labels like GOTS or organic certifications, which don’t affect how a buckwheat pillow supports, adjusts, or holds its shape over time.
Sleep Surface
Outer covers chosen for feel and airflow
Bamboo, Tencel™, and other premium cover options help complete the pillow with a cooler, more refined surface.
Brand Focus
Buckwheat is not a side product for us
PineTales has crafted best-in-class buckwheat pillows since 2017. Trusted by sleepers nationwide for quality, comfort, and craftsmanship.

It is a premium take on the traditional Sobakawa pillow, built for steady support, long term durability, and a more refined sleep surface.

Who is this pillow best for?

  • First-Time Buckwheat Pillow Users: Whether you want a firm natural sleep surface or a clean introduction to buckwheat hull support, this no-fluff design provides steady support without unnecessary synthetic foam layers.
  • Side & Back Sleepers: The firm hulls contour to the gap between your neck and shoulders, keeping your head and spine aligned without collapsing to help reduce strain and support better sleep posture.
  • Hot Sleepers: Naturally breathable cotton layers pair with the 3D structure of the hulls to allow constant airflow, keeping you cool and dry all night.

How It Helps You Sleep Better

Support That Lasts

  • The organic hulls shift to match your exact anatomical contours, then lock securely in place. No midnight fluffing or readjusting required.
  • Highly effective for sleepers who need firmer support around the neck, shoulders, and upper spine.

Fully Adjustable Comfort

  • Simply unzip the durable case to add or remove hulls, fine-tuning the height and firmness to your specific body type.
  • Removing hulls makes the pillow softer and more moldable; adding hulls makes it firmer and more supportive. Not sure where to start? Read our step-by-step usage guide.

Premium Cotton Twill Core + Egyptian Cotton Cover

Signature Edition Construction

  • Premium Buckwheat Pillow Design: A more durable, more refined version of the traditional Japanese Sobakawa pillow, without unnecessary foam, padding, or synthetic fill.
  • Extra Thick Cotton Twill Core: Made from premium, unbleached cotton twill that is approximately 2 to 3 times thicker than the thin cotton shells commonly found in basic buckwheat pillows. All cases feature premium Japanese YKK zippers.
  • Included Egyptian Cotton Cover: Every Signature Edition pillow includes a custom-fitted Egyptian Cotton cover. Known for its extra-long fibers, this luxurious fabric offers a crisp, ultra-smooth surface that feels soft, breathable, and grows softer with every wash.

The Filling: 100% Organic Buckwheat Hulls

  • Gluten-free, naturally hypoallergenic, and purified through a rigorous 4-step triple-screening and heat-treatment process.
  • Guaranteed odor-free, pesticide-free, and ready for use immediately.
  • The unique geometric structure of the hulls enhances airflow, actively drawing heat away from your head.
  • Filling lasts 5–10 years and can be easily refreshed by sun-drying for a few hours.

Questions & Answers

What is a Sobakawa pillow?

A Sobakawa is the original Japanese buckwheat pillow. It features a simple, durable cotton shell filled with 100% buckwheat hulls. The design prioritizes firm, moldable support and natural airflow—a tradition trusted for centuries for better sleep and posture.

Who is this Classic pillow best for?

This pillow is ideal for purists and anyone seeking extra-firm, traditional support. If you're a side or back sleeper who wants a no-frills pillow that locks in place, this is for you. If you prefer a softer, more cushioned feel, our Signature Buckwheat Pillow with its padded bamboo cover might be a better fit.

How is this different from your Signature pillow?

The main difference is the cover. The Classic Sobakawa has a single, durable cotton twill shell for a direct and firm feel. The Signature Model features a two-layer design with a soft, quilted bamboo outer cover that adds cushioning and muffles sound. Think of the Classic as the authentic, extra-firm original and the Signature as a modern, luxury version.

How do I adjust the loft and firmness?

It's simple. The pillow has a heavy-duty YKK zipper, allowing you to easily add or remove buckwheat hulls. Take some out for a softer, lower pillow, or keep it full for maximum firm support. We intentionally overstuff our pillows so you have plenty of hulls to customize your perfect loft. For full guidance, read our adjustment article →

How do I wash and care for it?

The cotton shell is fully machine washable. Just follow these steps:
1. Unzip the cover and pour the buckwheat hulls into a box or bag.
2. Machine wash the empty shell on a gentle cycle and air dry completely.

Important: Never get the buckwheat hulls wet. To refresh them, just spread them out in the sun for a few hours. Read our full cleaning guide for more details.
