Most pillows get softer, flatter, and less supportive over time. Buckwheat hulls works differently by shifting into place and holding a more stable shape through the night to keep your supported all night.
Foam can soften as it warms up, while down and polyester fill often compress and go flat. That usually means less support by the middle of the night, especially around the neck and shoulders.
The buckwheat hulls create the stable support, while the Bamboo or Tencel outer layer adds a softer surface on top. You still get real buckwheat support, but with a more refined feel against the face and ears.

Buckwheat pillows are naturally firmer than foam, which is why they are excellent for spinal alignment and neck pain. While hulls do make a rustic "crunching" sound, our Premium model uses an extra-thick, padded Quilted Bamboo cover which significantly muffles the sound compared to cheaper brands.

Do not wash the buckwheat hulls.
1. Unzip the covers and pour the hulls into a dry container/bag.
2. Machine wash the inner and outer covers on a gentle cycle.

We recommend the Japanese Plus Size (14" × 20") for most sleepers. It is the traditional size for buckwheat pillows because it keeps the heavy filling concentrated directly under your neck for the best support. The Standard Size (20" × 26") is available if you prefer the look of a traditional American bed pillow.
