New to Buckwheat Pillows?

A buckwheat pillow is filled with natural hulls instead of foam or fiber. The hulls move with you as you settle in, creating a firm, adjustable feel with steady airflow through the pillow.

Most first-time users need a few nights to dial in the right fill level and shape. Read how long it takes to get used to a buckwheat pillow.

Learn more about how buckwheat pillows work.

Choosing the Right Size

Both sizes are adjustable and use the same buckwheat hull fill. The main difference is not firmness. The main difference is how much pillow surface you want on the bed.

Japanese Plus
14" × 20"
  • Choose this if you want a smaller, more compact buckwheat pillow.
  • Better if you mainly sleep in one position and do not need a large pillow surface.
  • Good if regular bed pillows often feel oversized or take up too much room.
  • Gives a more traditional Sobakawa-style feel with less extra pillow around the head.
Standard
20" × 26"
  • Choose this if you want the size of a regular American bed pillow.
  • Better if you change positions, roll from side to back, or move across the pillow at night.
  • Good if you want more surface area under your head, neck, and shoulders.
  • Fits standard pillowcases and feels more familiar on a full-size bed setup.
Simple rule: choose Standard if you want the safest everyday bed pillow size. Choose Japanese Plus if you specifically want a smaller, more compact buckwheat pillow.

Read our buckwheat pillow size guide.

Adjusting the Fill for Better Support

Start with the pillow as it arrives, then remove a small amount of hulls if it feels too high or too firm. Give yourself a few nights to fine tune the fill until your head and neck feel properly supported.

When lying down, gently shape the hulls into the curve of your neck instead of using the pillow completely flat.

If the pillow feels too high, too firm, or too noisy, it usually needs a small setup change before you judge it. Read the guide to common buckwheat pillow mistakes.

See our setup instructions.

Keeping Your Pillow Fresh

Remove any washable cover components according to your pillow model before cleaning. The buckwheat hull filling should always stay dry.

Regular airing and proper cover care will help keep your pillow feeling clean, fresh, and ready for nightly use.

Why Choose a PineTales Buckwheat Pillow?

Multiple Models. Cleaner Hulls. Built to Last.
Better Fill Quality

Whole hulls, not weak crushed fill

A buckwheat pillow is only as good as the hulls inside. PineTales uses whole buckwheat hulls selected for firm, steady support.

PineTales difference: the fill is chosen for structure, not just to make the pillow look full.
Cleaner Hulls

Cleaned in four stages

Our hulls are screened, washed, heat treated, and UV treated before they go into the pillow.

PineTales difference: cleaner fill without polishing the hulls down until they lose the structure buckwheat pillows need.
More Adjustability

Ships full so you can fine tune it

PineTales buckwheat pillows arrive intentionally overfilled, usually about 5 to 7 inches thick.

PineTales difference: you can remove hulls until the height feels right instead of starting with a pillow that is already too low.
Built for Longevity

Materials chosen to hold up

Buckwheat hulls are dense, so the fabric, stitching, and zipper have to handle real weight. We choose materials for durability, not just for label appeal.

PineTales difference: GOTS or organic cotton labels do not tell you if the shell is thick, the zipper is strong, or the pillow is built for years of use.
Better Cover Design

A cover system matched to each model

PineTales buckwheat pillows are not built around one basic cover. Depending on the model, we offer Egyptian Cotton, Bamboo, Tencel, Cool Touch, and Dual Side options.

PineTales difference: each cover is chosen to match the pillow model, the feel, and the way the pillow is used.
Industry Leader

The industry leader in buckwheat pillows

PineTales does not make one generic buckwheat pillow and call it done. We offer multiple buckwheat pillow models for different sleepers, support needs, and cover preferences.

PineTales difference: Since 2017, PineTales has set a higher standard for buckwheat pillows with cleaner hulls, adjustable height, durable construction, premium fabrics, and real model choices. Every year, thousands of customers trust PineTales for their buckwheat pillow needs, many of them referred by their chiropractor or physical therapist.

Adjustable Buckwheat Hull Pillow with Premium Cover Options

Our Buckwheat Pillow - Platinum Edition pairs an adjustable 100% organic buckwheat hull core with a removable outer cover made for comfort, airflow, and a smoother sleep surface. The featured dual-side Bamboo + Cooling cover gives you two fabric surfaces in one cover: a smooth bamboo-rayon side for soft, breathable comfort and a Cool-Touch side for a cooler surface feel. Additional cover options include Bamboo, Tencel™, and Cool-Touch, allowing you to choose the fabric feel that best fits your sleep preferences.

Who is this pillow best for?

  • Anyone who wants firm, adjustable support: The 100% organic buckwheat hull core molds around your head and neck, then holds its shape for stable support throughout the night.
  • Side and back sleepers: The fill can be adjusted to match your preferred pillow height, making it easier to dial in support for your shoulder width, neck position, and sleep posture.
  • Hot sleepers: The buckwheat hull structure naturally allows airflow through the pillow, while the cover options let you choose between breathable bamboo, moisture-managing Tencel™, Cool-Touch fabric, or the dual-side Bamboo + Cooling cover.
  • Sleepers who want fabric choice: Choose the dual-side cover for two fabric surfaces in one pillow, or select Bamboo, Tencel™, or Cool-Touch as a dedicated single-surface cover.
  • First-time buckwheat users: The padded outer cover creates a smoother, slightly cushioned surface over the firm buckwheat hull core. No extra pillowcase is required.
  • Those seeking a top-tier buckwheat pillow: The Platinum Edition uses a refined two-layer build that helps reduce the typical hull feel and sound while preserving the firm, moldable support that makes buckwheat pillows different from ordinary soft filled pillows.

The Filling: 100% Organic Buckwheat Hulls

  • Our most advanced buckwheat pillow option for firm, adjustable support. The hulls shift into position, hold their shape, and help reduce the need to keep refluffing your pillow during the night.
  • The 3D structure of the hulls creates natural ventilation and helps prevent heat buildup. Unlike many foam pillows that can trap warmth, buckwheat hulls remain naturally breathable.
  • All hulls undergo our rigorous 4-stage cleaning and heat-treatment process before they are used in PineTales pillows.
  • Weight (14x20): Approx. 6.5 lbs
  • Weight (20x26): Approx. 12–13 lbs
  • Height: Approx. 6–7 inches thick when fully filled. The pillow is intentionally overstuffed so you can remove hulls and adjust the height.

Premium Two-Layer Design

Outer Case: Dual-Side Bamboo + Cooling, Bamboo, Tencel™, or Cool-Touch

  • Dual-Side Bamboo + Cooling Cover: The featured cover gives you a bamboo side and a Cool-Touch side in one pillow, combining a softer breathable fabric surface with a cooler surface feel.
  • Bamboo Cover: Smooth, breathable, and soft against the skin. This option is ideal for everyday comfort and a more natural fabric feel.
  • Tencel™ Cover: Smooth and refined with a clean fabric feel. A good option for sleepers who prefer a silkier surface.
  • Cool-Touch Cover: Designed to feel cooler against the skin and help reduce the warm surface feel common with many traditional pillows.
  • Extra-Thick Comfort: Each padded outer cover adds a softer surface layer over the firm buckwheat hull core, helping reduce direct pressure against the ears, jaw, and cheekbones. PineTales pillow covers are 2 to 3 times as thick as many comparable covers.
  • Platinum Edition Design: The covers feature the PineTales star constellation or horizon design for a refined look that matches the most advanced buckwheat pillow construction in the PineTales lineup.

Inner Case: Woven Cotton Core

  • This durable inner case securely contains the organic buckwheat hull filling.
  • The fabric density helps keep fine hull dust contained inside the inner pillow while still allowing the fill to mold properly.
  • Strong yet flexible construction allows the outer cover and inner hull core to work together for firm, shapeable support.
  • Both inner and outer cases feature premium Japanese YKK zippers. We use visible, durable zippers by design instead of flimsy hidden zippers that can catch or break more easily.

Adjustable Fill and Simple Care

  • Adjustable Height: Open the zippered inner cotton case to remove buckwheat hulls and fine tune the pillow height.
  • Washable Cover System: Remove the buckwheat hulls before washing. The outer cover is machine washable, and the inner cotton case can also be washed once emptied.
  • Do Not Wash the Hulls: Buckwheat hulls should stay dry. To refresh them, place them in direct sunlight for a few hours. Learn more about buckwheat pillow care.
  • Available in Two Sizes: Offered in Japanese Plus (14" × 20") for targeted support and Standard (20" × 26") for a larger sleep surface.

Questions & Answers

Will this pillow attract bugs?

No. We use a rigorous 4-stage cleaning process for our buckwheat hulls. This removes dust, debris, and potential food sources for pests, ensuring your pillow is hypoallergenic, clean, and breathable.

Is the pillow adjustable? (How do I change the height?)

Yes! We intentionally overstuff every pillow. The inner and outer cases feature durable YKK zippers. When you receive your pillow, we recommend unzipping it and removing some hulls to find your perfect neck alignment. Save the extra hulls in a bag to refresh your pillow later!

Is it noisy or too hard?

Buckwheat pillows are naturally firmer than foam, which is why they are excellent for spinal alignment and neck pain. While hulls do make a rustic "crunching" sound, our Premium model uses an extra-thick, padded Quilted Bamboo cover which significantly muffles the sound compared to cheaper brands.

Why don't you accept returns?

We operate on a Hygiene-First Guarantee. Because pillows are intimate bedding items, accepting returns would mean re-selling used items or creating massive waste. By not accepting returns, we guarantee that the pillow you receive is 100% brand new, sanitary, and has never been slept on by a stranger.

How do I clean the pillow?

Do not wash the buckwheat hulls.
1. Unzip the covers and pour the hulls into a dry container/bag.
2. Machine wash the inner and outer covers on a gentle cycle.
3. To refresh the hulls, simply place them in sunlight for a few hours. Read our full cleaning guide →

Which size should I get?

We recommend the Japanese Plus Size (14" × 20") for most sleepers. It is the traditional size for buckwheat pillows because it keeps the heavy filling concentrated directly under your neck for the best support. The Standard Size (20" × 26") is available if you prefer the look of a traditional American bed pillow.
